What Happens to a Bottle That Becomes Fabric

Recycled polyester starts as collected PET bottles, not as fabric waste. The bottles are sorted by colour, washed, shredded into flakes, melted, and extruded into filament that is spun into yarn. Chemically the result is close to virgin polyester, and it takes roughly ten bottles to make one T-shirt.

The awkward part of the topic sits in that first sentence. A garment sold as recycled is usually made from the drinks industry's waste rather than from clothing, which means textile-to-textile circularity is not what is happening, and the bottle has been diverted from a system that already recycled it repeatedly. Excluded on purpose is any brand's specific claim: naming companies or reproducing marketing language turns a materials lesson into an accusation the institution then has to defend.

Design students meet recycled polyester as a marketing term long before they meet it as a process. They arrive either convinced it solves the problem or convinced it is greenwashing, and both positions block the actual learning, which is that the answer depends on what is being compared with what.

Name the comparison being made

Recycled polyester is better than virgin polyester on energy and feedstock. It is not better than not producing the garment, and it does not address microfibre shedding at all. Stating the comparison is the entire lesson.

Explain why the bottle matters more than the fabric

Bottle-to-fibre is a one-way trip: the fibre is much harder to recycle again. That single mechanism explains most of the criticism of the material and is rarely taught.

End on what would actually change it

Textile-to-textile and chemical recycling are the routes that resolve the problem. Closing there gives students something to design toward rather than a reason to be cynical.
