Why Two Fields With the Same Seed Yield Differently
Two fields sown with the same seed can yield very differently because the soil between them differs in three ways: how much organic matter it holds, how compacted it is, and how well it drains. Roots follow air and water, and compacted soil stops both, which caps yield regardless of fertiliser applied.
That last clause is the one growers push back on, and it is the reason this topic is worth a video rather than a leaflet. Nutrient inputs are visible, measurable, and purchasable, while structure is none of those things, so a field with a compaction pan gets more fertiliser instead of remediation and the money is spent on a limit it cannot lift. What does not belong on screen is prescriptive rates: application figures, product names, and tillage depths vary by soil type and season and should come from a local agronomist rather than a video.
