What Happens to Rain After It Hits the Street

Rain falling on a road runs to the kerb, drops through a gully, and travels to a river, lake, or the sea — in most towns with no treatment at all. That is the surprise: the storm drain and the foul sewer are two separate networks, and only one ends at a treatment works.

Anything poured into a street gully arrives in open water largely unchanged, and two public behaviours follow directly from misunderstanding that split. Oil, paint, and cleaning water get tipped down gullies on the assumption they will be treated, and blocked gullies go unreported because residents assume the drain is someone else's business until the road floods. The one thing to withhold is a promise about response times: naming a clearance window for a reported blockage creates an expectation the maintenance schedule may not meet.

Name the two networks in the same scene

Residents cannot be expected to hold the distinction if it is never stated plainly. One scene contrasting the storm drain with the foul sewer prevents most of the wrong-drain pollution.

Show a blocked gully during rainfall, not when dry

A leaf-filled gully in dry weather looks harmless. The same gully with water backing across a carriageway is what makes a resident photograph it and report it.

Put the reporting route on screen as text, not speech

Someone standing in the rain next to a flooded gully will pause the video and read. A spoken reference number or web address is lost; an on-screen one is used.

No. A storm drain carries surface water to a river, lake, or coastal outfall, usually untreated. A foul sewer carries wastewater from homes and businesses to a treatment works. In most towns they are entirely separate networks, which is why what enters a street gully matters.

Because road drainage is designed with very little spare capacity. Surface water follows the camber to the lowest gully, and when that one is blocked the flow has nowhere to go but across the carriageway, which is why a single leaf-packed grate can close a junction.
